Fuel consumption in felling and in transportation has been reduced by 30 % since 1985. The reason for this favourable development is more efficient machines and systems. This is the conclusion of studies made by Skogforsk, the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden. Low fuel consumption is good for both forestry economy and for the environment. The reduction since 1985 is remarkable. The reason is close co-operation between machine manufacturers, users and researchers. Ever more efficient machines and working methods have quickly been taken into extensive use.
It is most important to continue along this path. More efficient engines, optimal hydraulic systems and new fuels are just a few examples of what can be done. Optimal driving, lower ground friction, timber transportation vehicles with bigger loading capacity are other examples. Cutting present fuel consumption by half is today a realistic target.
