Dr Béla Pál Bózsik, who is an acknowledged expert on Lyme-Borreliosis, Secretary of Lyme Disease Foundation Advisory Board, having heard about the role of pathogenic fungi in killing insects while in the US, wondered if the principle could work for tick control.
Dr Bózsik told his idea to the well-known fungi specialist Zoltán Bratek and a thorough research started.
Insecticides, containing pathogenic fungi are used for Colorado potato beetle, locust and aphid control in countries as England, France. In the United States biopesticides againts ticks are available even in hypermarkets. However, they are effective only for the types of tick spread in North America.
Unfortunately, the types and kinds of the tick found in Hungary is still unknown, though research is going on.
Tick infection is a great threat in Hungary. Tick-borne diseases are very frequent. Today every fifth parasite is infected with lyme borreliosis.Their increase and overspreading might be exlained with high game population, too many rodents or the lack of forest grazing.
Having found producers, the new tick killer can be applied in parks, trails camping sites and other recreational areas, for it will destroy nothing but the tick.
