This year Danish forest owners for a first time have an opportunity to apply for support for drawing up green management plans for their forests. The Ministry of the Environment, which initiated the support scheme, says that 300 forest owners have exploited this opportunity.
Support applications have been made for plans to create green management on an aggregate area of 50 000 hectares of private forest. That is almost as big as the entire Bornholm island. Applications amount to a total of 18 million DKK, i.e. about 2.4 million €.
Green management plans can serve as a first step towards forest certification. These plans contain inter alia cards and other information about the animals and plants that live in the forest, about the opportunities for outdoor activities and where there are archaeologically important sites. In this way forest owners know how and were they shall take extra care of their forest, for example by avoiding spraying insecticides and pesticides.
