The Woodland Trust is urging everyone to make a New Year’s resolution today, and commit to recycling their Christmas cards.
This year’s target is to recycle 90 million Christmas cards – that’s enough to fill 100,000 of Santa’s sacks!
And to make things even easier, Recycle Now and the Woodland Trust have got some big high street names on board.
Special bins will be in place across the UK mainland from 2nd to 31st January at selected retail outlets:
- Tesco supermarkets (including some Express stores)
- WHSmith high street stores
- TK Maxx
That should give everyone enough time to take cards for recycling after Christmas.
Christmas message
The record-breaking 2006 campaign encouraged us in the UK to recycle a staggering 82 million Christmas cards.
And to help beat that, Recycle Now has enlisted the support of TV soap star Debra Stephenson – Corrie’s Frankie Baldwin.
Debra says: “I’m delighted to be part of this campaign. I’m a keen recycler myself and will be taking all of my Christmas cards this year to participating WHSmith, Tesco and TK Maxx stores. It’s a great way for people to get their New Year off to a greener start.”
Pulp facts
All the cards collected at these stores will be taken to paper mills, where they are recycled into brand new paper products like corrugated cardboard, copier paper – even next year’s Christmas cards!
Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, says:
“The Trust thanks everyone who supports the campaign each year. You’re helping us to plant thousands of new trees and protect the little ancient woodland we have left in the UK.”
