On October 9th, Thomas Nelson Inc. published the first Bible printed on FSC and recycled paper. The Bible is the most widely circulated book in history. This FSC certified publication is symbolic of broader industry-wide transformations underway in the U.S. book sector at large.
Thomas Nelson worked with its FSC certified paper manufacturer, Domtar, to develop a new environmentally responsible paper grade specifically suited for the lightweight paper requirements of Bible paper. Domtar won the 2006 FSC Wind of Change Award in Canada for its commitment to FSC and exceptional contributions to improving forest management practices.
Thomas Nelson closely collaborated with Green Press Initiative, a U.S.-based organization that is catalyzing shifts in the U.S. book sector to increase the use of recycled and FSC certified paper.
“Given the Bible’s message of stewardship…,” stated Green Press Initiative Director Tyson Miller, “we hope to see other Bible and religion publishers following Thomas Nelson’s lead through steps to use paper with less impacts on forests, people, and the climate.”
Publishers of all sizes including Random House, Scholastic and many others, are choosing FSC certification to take responsibility for their social and environmental impacts.
