Sustainable forest management and climate change mitigation:
building on past experience
There is extensive experience worldwide in sustainable forest management – putting in place the policy, institutional, technical and financial frameworks needed to sustain and enhance social, economic and environmental services from forests. A wealth of knowledge, best practices, tools, mechanisms and partnerships in SFM are available to meet the challenges of climate change mitigation and adaptation. The side event will highlight some relevant activities at country, regional and international levels.
12:00-13:00 PRESENTATIONS
Susan Braatz, FAO
Perspectives on forests and climate change mitigation
An overview of the links between sustainable forest management and climate change mitigation will be presented,
highlighting areas of opportunity and key issues to be addressed.
Peter Holmgren, FAO
Strengthening countries’ capacities in forest resources assessment
The presentation will describe partnerships between FAO and countries for strengthening their capacity in forest resource monitoring, assessment and reporting -- including in establishing long-term, robust forest monitoring systems and in reporting to the global Forest Resources Assessments. The status in countries on two important
variables for climate change reporting – forest area changes and carbon stock, will be discussed.
Bachrianto Bachtiar, South Sulawesi Coalition for Forest
Civil Society's Essential Involvement for Successful Government Policy Implementation
The speaker will present the work of the National Forest Programme Facility in Indonesia, with a particular focus on activities in Sulawesi, to support the participation of all stakeholders in strengthening the forest policy process and the implementation of policy on the ground.
Pat Durst, FAO (Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific)
Codes and Guidelines for Sustainable Forest Management
Application of best practices in forest management can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
FAO’s assistance to countries, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, to develop and implement codes of practice for forest harvesting, and voluntary guidelines for planted forests and wildland fire management will be discussed.
Steven Johnson, International Tropical Timber Organization
Best Practices for Improving Law Compliance in the Forest Sector
Weak governance and lack of law compliance in the forest sector constitute disincentives for SFM, thus contributing to deforestation and forest degradation -- and to GHG emissions. The presentation describes the joint effort by ITTO and FAO to assist countries develop and implement strategies to combat illegal forestry activities by promoting best practices, enhancing stakeholder dialogue and fostering regional collaboration.
Peter Csoka, United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat
The Non-Legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forest
The presentation will focus on the recently agreed Non-Legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests to be adopted by the UN General Assembly during its 62nd session in 2007. It will highlight the Global Objectives on Forests and the Forum’s multi-year programme of work, including, in 2009, the issue of forests and climate change
and means of implementation for sustainable forest management.
