The Commission of the European Union published the long-waited climate and energy package on 23rd January 2008. The package will pave the way for EU’s adaptation to the challenge of climate change and it will open new possibilities for European forests and forest sector.

Nordic Family Forest Owners warmly welcomes Commission’s initiative and sees it as a major catalyst for the more extensive use of wood. The increased use of wood – both in conventional industry and in bioenergy production – will bring following benefits:
- new market for small dimension timber, law quality wood and forest residues improving forest owners’ income
- enhance local entrepreneurship and vitality of rural areas
- contribute to establishment of decentralised local and regional heat and power production and supply systems
- create additional incentive for forest owners to invest in forest management. This will improve the silvicultural state of forests and will lead to an increase in the supply of industrial raw material
- contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation by increasing the amount of carbon stored in forests and forest products
