The Union for the Protection of Private Proprietors (UPPP) took Bulgarian government to court over Natura 2000 environmental network, Investor.bg reported on May 12.

In particular, the union contests a Governmental decision that put an environmental protection tag on territories, which are part of approved general and territorial master plans.
The decision saw entire towns, such as Byala, part of Balchik, the villages of Kranevo, Rogachevo and a number of villages from the Aksakov municipality, all on the northern seaside, were put into the list of environmentally protected zones in Bulgaria. The original idea was to itemise only agricultural land within the Natura 2000.
People in the region were concerned that with 87 per cent of the territories falling within Natura 2000, the region was practically deprived of opportunities for economic development.
The Supreme Administrative Court will hear the case on May 28.
