The wind storm caused enormous damage to the forests in northern Spain. The first assessment by the Galician local authorities estimates 40.000 ha extending to more than 1,5 million cubic metres, about 25 % of annual cut, have been affected, principally pine and eucalyptus forests. However, in Spain the situation for forest owners, making every effort to harvest the crop, becomes even more complicated because the storm destroyed trails and roads, thus certainly making this harvest more expensive and difficult.
On 27th February Christer Segerstéen, President of CEPF will host a meeting in Sweden for forest owner organisations from France and Spain, which have been affected by the Storm Klaus. Building on the experiences from the previous storms in Sweden, Germany and France, CEPF takes an initiative to exchange knowledge and to discuss the implications and measures for future similar occurrences.
