This meeting will be co-organised with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and will focus on the international implications of the Waxman-Markey bill now working its way through the US Congress, as well as the preliminary steps by UN-REDD and FCPF to establish REDD Readiness in developing countries to date. Expert panels will address the following topics:
Update on the status of REDD in the UNFCCC negotiations and implications of the recent G8 and G20 meetings on this debate;
Implications of the Waxman-Markey bill on REDD - scope of impact, schedule for implementation and potential linkages to international initiatives;
Implementation of FCPF, UN-REDD and FIP-sponsored 'readiness' activities to date - emerging lessons regarding consultation and recognition of rights in legal frameworks;
Status of public and private finance for REDD - status of market, emerging speculation, role of policy and markets in reducing deforestation and degradation.
