29-05-2016 - The terror rained down on a Minnesota dentist after he shot a lion would not have happened if more people understood the benefits of hunting.
That's why Fieldsports Channel is launching a new African hunting show on YouTube: Fieldsports Africa.
"YouTube means we can reach most people involved in this debate," says Fieldsports Channel host Charlie Jacoby. "Fieldsports Channel is already the biggest and most trusted hunting channel on YouTube - and on any TV network anywhere - with 100,000 subscribers and more than a million views a month. Fieldsports Africa will not hide away on a 'hunters-only' TV network. We are loud and proud about hunting and shooting."
Sponsored by hunting and shooting companies, Fieldsports Africa lifts the lid on hunting, and shows conservation in action through the only people prepared to pay for it, the world's sport hunters. In episode 1, we go warthog hunting and show how Nico from East Cape Bushveld Hunting manages wildlife and turns warthog into sausages. We profile Chris and Toni Bolton of Zungah Safaris and we go waterbuck hunting with their Australian clients. The show is hosted by professional wildlife cameraman Richard Leonard, based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Hundreds of thousands of African animals - from the tiniest antelope to the 'big five' - are raised and live natural lives on vast estates across the continent that are set up for hunting. Countries like South Africa, Namibia and Tanzania where hunting thrives have many more healthy populations of large wildlife than countries such as Kenya where hunting is banned.
The figures speak for themselves. South Africa has 12,000 lions, with 8,000 of those on hunting ranches. Kenya has just 2,000 lions, losing more than 100 a year to poachers, and the animal faces extinction in Kenya within 20 years.
"We want to make a world where Piers Morgan doesn't have to call for the death of anyone," says Fieldsports Channel host Charlie Jacoby. "If anti-hunting members of the public realised the benefits of hunting, they might be less anti.
"When anti-hunters made their 'Blood Lions' film last year, they had so little evidence they relied on footage of lions in the South African equivalent of a petting zoo. Fieldsports Africa will show real hunting in real situations with real conservation benefits.'
