Cluj-Napoca, October 14, 2019 - A fisherman was killed in a bear attack in Vámosudvarhely, Mureş county, - said Monday on Székelyhon.ro.
Csaba Bartos, deputy mayor of Vámosudvarhely, Kóródszentmárton told the portal about the tragedy that took place on Saturday evening. He said that one of the two bear cubs, who had been seen several times in the area, had been attacked by an angler who had fished about six hundred meters from the edge of the settlement in the river Kis-Küküllő. Csaba Bartos added that the gendarmerie had been alerted once in early October when a bear had entered the village. The wild animal is seen almost daily by shepherds grazing on the surrounding hills, who protect their goats with electric shepherds and large dogs.
On Sunday and Monday, the Mayor's Office in Kóródszentmárton warned residents of the surrounding villages of the danger of a bear and urged people not to go to the border alone.
The 61-year-old victim of the weekend bear attack was a nearby notary at Nyárádmagyarós, who had been going to the same place every weekend for years. According to the Zi-DE-zi.ro Maros County News Portal, the big game wrinkled the victim's face completely and ripped one of its arms. Authorities were alerted by the victim's family after finding that the man did not answer their phone calls.
In Romania, the bear population has increased after the Ciolos government banned bear hunting in 2016. Previously, the Ministry of the Environment had given permission to shoot 400-450 bears a year. According to an estimate made by the Ministry of the Environment in spring 2019, the number of wild bears in the country is between 6,450 and 7,200. According to an action plan for the conservation of the bear population issued last year, the optimum number of large predators in the 69,000 square kilometers of Romanian habitat would be 4,000 in ecological, social and economic terms.
