Due to climate change, maintaining artificial water bodies will become an increasingly important task in forestry in the coming years – the summary published on Thursday reads.
Forest ponds, ponds and watering holes are not only shelters for wildlife, they also contribute to preserving the ecological balance of forest habitats. According to experts’ calculations, such interventions can help hundreds of animals survive, not only by providing drinking water, but also because large game regularly use these places to regulate their body temperature. The extreme heat and lack of precipitation are a major challenge for forest wildlife, and due to the drying up of natural water bodies, forestry enterprises must provide water – they wrote.
According to agroinform.hu, forestry companies are now paying increased attention to filling game drinking troughs, ponds and artificial water sources
The water supply for game animals is provided by, among others, Egererdő Zrt., Bakonyerdő Zrt., and Gyulaj Zrt., which emphasized that water surfaces act as an oasis in the forest, contributing to the improvement of the forest microclimate and the preservation of biodiversity. Ipoly Erdő Zrt. stated that there is still enough water in the inner parts of Börzsöny, while the Nagykunság NEFAG Zrt. reported that practically all natural water sources in their areas had dried up by August, so the water trough is now the only reliable source of water for many animals. The Kiskunság KEFAG Zrt. emphasized that the water sources created in recent years have become important elements of the forest ecosystem, and their professional hunters and foresters jointly develop and monitor the watering and water replenishment systems year after year – the website states.
