Enjoing our Forests
Coillte are a successful forestry company, but has always been conscious of the important role we play in providing recreational opportunities for the public around the country. Our Open Forest encourages the public to explore and enjoy what is a great renewable natural resource. In general, the public can access any of our forests around the country, but restrictions may occur in places where forestry operations may pose a threat to public safety. In addition to this general access, we operate 11 Forest Parks and greater than 180 recreation areas, where formal recreational facilities are available for the public to enjoy. Many of these recreational areas have been developed in consultation and partnership with local communities. Please visit the Tourism and Recreation section of our website to find out more about these areas.
Many of Irelands long distance walking routes, known as Waymarked Ways, pass through Coillte's Forests. In total there are 31 Ways in Ireland covering a distance of more than 3,000km. These Ways are signposted with waymarks, the familiar yellow arrow and "Walking Man". Where necessary, stiles and bridges have been erected. The Ways have been established by local Committees in partnership with Bord Fáilte (Irish Tourist Board), Coillte, local authorities, private landowners and voluntary workers. The development and maintenance of the Ways are co-ordinated by the NWWAC (National Waymarked Ways Advisory Committee, Irish Sports Council). Coillte Meitheal is a volunteer group of Coillte employees and friends who do trail maintenance work on several of these national way marked trails through out the country. The group has created its own website that you can link to here at the trail volunteers website.
