Chennai – A week-long film festival that dwells on environmental issues and the impact of development in the country is on in the Tamil Nadu state capital.
Organised by a Chennai-based youth initiative "We Feel Responsible" (WFR), the Aug 8-13 festival is titled "In the Name of Development" The festival will screen 12 films.
Films shown at the Alliance Francaise festival venue are on themes like industrial pollution, privatisation, on water, agriculture and on environmental degradation.
Shweta Narayan, one of the organisers and a filmmaker herself, said: "We Feel Responsible is a youth initiative - for youth to get together and discuss their dilemmas and understand the politics of development and issues concerning our society today."
"The film festival is the first of WFR's major initiatives aimed at attracting youth to discuss issues of social relevance and engage themselves in meaningfully addressing them," she said.
The festival also includes WFR's own production "Hangover". This film looks at the nature and quantity of trash generated at the end of popular college festivals.
Expert panellists lead an hour-long discussion after the screening of the day's films every day.
