The World Water Week with the 15th Stockholm Water Symposium takes place August 21-27, 2005 at the Stockholm City Conference Centre/Folkets Hus.
A core activity of the annual World Water Week in Stockholm is the Stockholm Water Symposium. Since 1991, the Stockholm Water Symposium has carved its niche as a leading, forward-looking gathering for scientists, politicians, decision makers and different stakeholders. The theme for the 15th Stockholm Water Symposium is Drainage Basin Management - Hard and Soft Solutions in Regional Development.
In the plenary sessions and workshops, discussions will focus on three areas:
Water resources development, conveyance, allocation and environmental flow –
Water supply and sanitation to cater for household requirements
Water management, including pollution abatement, in industrial and food producing sectors
Young water enthusiasts from 27 different countries will be in Stockholm from August 21-27 to compete for top honours in the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition.
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is presented each year to a high-school age student whose research has conducted an outstanding water-related project focusing on topics of environmental, scientific, social or technological importance. The prize is given to an individual or group who, like their co-competitors, have been awarded the top prize in their national competition. The international prize will be presented for the ninth time
HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will present the prize on August 23 during a ceremony starting at 19.00 in Dansens Hus in Stockholm. The international Stockholm Junior Water Prize contest, which is held during the annual World Water Week in Stockholm, encourages young people’s interest in issues concerning water and the environment.
The countries participating in Stockholm are Argentina, Australia, Benin, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, USA and Vietnam.
For these young water enthusiasts, the World Water Week provides an opportunity to meet top world water experts convening in Stockholm, participate in seminars, visit research and technical facilities and attend cultural and social events.
The competing projects deal with a wide variety of topics, from the development of advanced technical devices to aspects of relevance for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, from simple local solutions for dry countries to innovative pollution abatement ideas, and from dissemination of key research results to public awareness campaigns.
The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) administers the competition on behalf of the Stockholm Water Foundation. The international competition is sponsored globally by ITT Industries.
High-resolution photos from the prize award ceremony will be available after 22.00 Central European Time on August 23, at www.worldwaterweek.org.
