Almost all timber offered for sale from private forests in Finland is certified.
Timber sold from family owned forests is PEFC-certified. In this autumn’s timber trade certain purchasers will introduce quality related pricing as a new element.
Forest owners will now have to reassess their market position when quality related pricing is introduced as a new aspect of purchasing offers. Stands of growing timber may for example be divided into three main categories; good, medium and bad.
The market situation will require new kinds of expertise and know-how by forest owners. The data systems used by forestry societies permit value calculations. These societies can exploit the new price information system for the timber trade introduced by the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK). These statistics cover not only saw timber and pulpwood, but also the price of special species of wood.
