A new investigation made by researchers at the Växjö University indicate that more than half of the wood from trees felled by the storm in Southern Sweden a year ago have a new kind of cracks, so called core cracks. Such cracks are usually found in old pine forests, but now cracks have been observed even in young spruce.
Mr Rolf Björheden, professor of forest technology, is an initiator of and a participant in the investigation. He says that such cracks are difficult to find. They weaken the durability to the wood that it is susceptible to breaking and splitting.
