Most of the tree plants for replacing the storm stricken forests in Southern Sweden are to be treated with poisonous insecticides in order to prevent the large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis) from gnawing at the stems.
However, new alternative non-poisonous methods may soon be dominant. Sweden's biggest tree plant producer, the company "Svenska Skogsplantor" has purchased the rights of two kinds of non-poisonous insecticides.
One of them is Conniflex. A coating of sand on the stem of the plant keeps the weevil at bay. The other one is Beta-Q. In this case a rubber coating prevents gnawing. Svenska Skogsplantor will further develop both methods
There is also a third alternative, called Bugstop. The stem of the plant is coated with wax that the weevil cannot gnaw through.
At the latest in 2010 no more poisonous insecticides will be used in Swedish.
