Last year Swedish lorries drove a distance of more than 12.5 million miles (English miles), which is the equivalent of 500 laps around the equator. But it is possible to reduce this distance drastically and to save both money and to reduce environmental damage. Ms Myrna Palmgren, mathematician at the Linköping University has invented new methods for an optimal organization of lorries' driving routes and she says that the present distance can be reduced by almost 15 %.
Myrna Palmgren has developed methods for choosing a few million different driving route plans and for comparing them. She has tested her methods on the wood processing companies Sydved, Södra and Holmen Skog. The tests prove that these companies could reduce lorries' driving distance by almost 1 900 000 km per year.
