Josué Morales, from the National Forest Fire Control and Prevention System, confirmed Tuesday that the disaster began in a distant zone from the archaeological center and units from that institution are intensively working to put out the fire.
The magnitude of the damaged area in that park is still unknown, but it is home to many different regional endemic species of wildlife.
This is the first forest fire reported in 2006 in the northern Guatemalan region, but not the only one in the rest of the national territory.
Since last February, this South American country registered 125 forest fires, which turned into ashes more than 1729 wooded acres
