The forestry and timber sector is worth L1 billion to Scotland’s economy. It provides more than 25,000 jobs and during the economic downturn, direct employment increased by 50 per cent.
How can the hidden success story be told more effectively to give this innovative, growing sector the recognition it deserves?
It offers much more than economic benefit; well-designed modern woodlands, made up of a mixture of species, can also deliver very significant environmental and social benefits – supporting wildlife, reducing carbon and helping to reduce flood risks, not to mention tremendous recreational opportunities.
Ahead of the Holyrood election of May 2016, the sector is in great shape - but with business decisions made over decades not months, how can Scotland ensure the future success of forestry and timber?
The event will conclude with a political panel discussion, with confirmed participants including Michael Russell MSP (SNP) and Jim Hume MSP (Liberal Democrat).
Expert speakers include:
Jo O'Hara, Head of Forestry Commission Scotland
Amanda Bryan, forestry consultant and chair, Forestry Commission Scotland
Prof Sean Smith, Director (Institute for Sustainable Construction), Edinburgh Napier University
Elizabeth Barron-Majerik, Programme Development Manager, Inverness College UHI
Andrew Vaughan, District Manager, Tilhill Forestry
Fergus Tickell, Chairman, Argyll Timber Transport Group and MD, Northern Energy Developments.
Hugh Chalmers, Tweed Forum
Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive, Confor: promoting forestry and wood
