Although average weekly rainfall of 13.5 litres per square metre is significantly up on the average for 1930-1986 of 8.7 litres, water levels have fallen as the rain failed to reach the reservoirs.
This time last year, when Spain was already in the grip of the most severe drought in living memory, total capacity stood at 55.7%, more than one percent up on the current situation. Average total capacity for this time of year over the last five years is 68.2%, or 68.1% over the last hundred years.
The situation continues to be most critical in the reservoirs in the Sur and Júcar basins, where total capacities stand at 16.5% and 19.9% respectively.
