The European Commission's DG Development and DG Environment have launched a public consultation to seek views on how to combat illegal logging - in particular how to avoid the EU serving as a market for illegally harvested timber from countries where such practices are believed to be widespread.

The consultation takes the form of a questionnaire on the 'Your Voice in Europe' website, and covers the main options that have been identified, ranging from strengthening current initiatives to additional legislation. Interested individuals and organisations, in particular those with an interest in forests and the timber trade, are invited to submit their views by 5 March 2007, using the link below.
The consultation follows calls from the Council of the EU and European Parliament for the Commission to examine further potential measures to address illegal logging in addition to those already being implemented under the EU's Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan.
