At present wood is the most important renewable energy source in Denmark. Firewood, shredded wood, wood waste and pellets constitute 31 % of total current energy consumption of Danish households. That is 50 % more than wind power. These figures were published by the Danish Energy Authority. Its evaluation is that the consumption of firewood equals 19 630 terajoule (TJ) of energy. This is 60 % more than expected. 525 000 heating stoves represent 13 % of all energy consumption in Danish households for heating purposes.
These are the Danish Energy Authority's latest figures concerning current energy production and consumption. The figures are from 2005, but the figures concerning firewood consumption have been updated to 2006.
Various kinds of wood provide an aggregate of 36 400 TJ of energy, which is 31 % of total current energy consumption.
One TJ is the equivalent of 100 m3 of deciduous firewood.
