Two of the three active fronts - Atzeneta and Costur - have now been brought under control, and air support is now being almost totally focused on the uncontrolled blaze threatening the town of Lucena del Cid.
The fire, which has affected the towns of Les Useres, Llucena, Costur, Alcora, Atzeneta del Maestrat and Figueroles, started on Tuesday as a result of an accident during maintenance to the high tension electricity network.
As well as mountain woodland and scrub, a number of cornflower, almond and olive plantations have also been destroyed.
According to local government official, Serafín Castellano , high temperatures and strengthening winds are complicating the job of the fire-fighting teams battling to control a forest fire, which remains active on three fronts, and which has already destroyed around 2,000 hectares within the municipal boundaries of three towns in Castellón province: Les Useres, Atzeneta and Llucena.
Mr Castellano confirmed yesterday that a further 50 fire-fighters supported by a Carpov helicopter and seven fire appliances will join the 300 already battling to control the blaze.
Owing to a recent change in wind direction, the most worrying of the three active fronts is currently the one threatening dense pine forests near Atzeneta, for which reason all available air support is currently being deployed in this area.
Based on a weather forecast of continued high temperatures and strengthening winds for the next couple of days at least, the regional government has declared a level three emergency alert, and residents living near the affected areas have been advised to stay indoors with the doors and windows closed to escape from the resulting cloud of dense smoke and ash.
Seven people were evacuated yesterday evening from two Masías (farms) near Les Useres threatened by the flames and smoke.
