Collars will be installed in areas where this year's moose hunting season is over. The search for moose to be anaesthetized and equipped with collars will be made from helicopters. The inventory will start as soon as there is enough snow on the ground to facilitate helicopter observations.
The purpose of the inventory is to find out on how large areas moose move around when they leave from their winter habitats to their summer browsing areas and how they move during the hunting season. The information will be exploited for focusing hunting areas in order to reduce forest damage in their winter habitats. The investigation will also provide information about factors impacting the health of moose and the extent of their parasite exposure.
A total of 120 moose will be equipped with GPS-GSM radio collars. Radio monitoring permits the collection of important information without extensive ground monitoring. The inventory will extend over the next two years and it is carried out in co-operation with the local game management districts, the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) and the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla). No equally precise investigations of moose mobility have been made in Finland so far.

In the course of the winter 2008 - 2009 the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute will put collars on moose in various parts of Finland. Transmitter surveillance will provide more information about moose movements. This information will be exploited for regulating the moose population, as well as for preventing moose collisions and forest damage.
