The UK-based Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is currently advertising two positions for field scientists to work in tropical forests:
1. Research biologist to work in Gola Forest, eastern Sierra Leone. Closing date 25 September 2007. 21 month contract based in Kenema and Gola Forest.
2. Senior scientist to work in Harapan Forest, Sumatra, Indonesia. Closing date 18 October 2007. 3 year contract based in the forest.

Gola Forest, Sierra Leone
Working with a Sierra Leonean counterpart, the postholder will primarily be responsible for providing and developing scientific capacity within the Research and Monitoring department of the Gola Forest Programme, in order to support the management planning and activities. He/she will also be required to oversee the implementation of other research work as may be required from time to time by the management partners. Key work areas will be in the design and implementation of suitable biological monitoring plans in accordance with the biological priorities established by the management; design and implementation of key research projects to address particular conservation management issues; and management of research into the economic valuation of the Gola Forest. Fieldwork will be carried out in Gola Forest based out of the town of Kenema in eastern Sierra Leone. Special skills in tropical forest ecology, survey design, statistical analysis, computing, technical writing, fieldwork, etc. and the flexibility to acquire skills in new areas.
Harapan Forest, Sumatra
A Senior Scientist is required for 3 years to act as a counterpart to the Head of Research and Conservation, (HRC)) for the Harapan Rainforest in Indonesia. The scientist will work with local partners and manage a survey team to conduct a biodiversity inventory of the forest, and will work with the HRC to develop a research strategy and a sustainable monitoring system. This post is funded by the Darwin Initiative, and the postholder will be jointly responsible with the HRC for managing and reporting on the Darwin project. It is expected that the Senior Scientist will play a major mentoring role for the counterpart and immediate subordinates. Special skills in ecology, particularly in tropical forests, statistical analysis, computing, technical writing, etc., and the flexibility to acquire skills in new areas. Experience of managing teams and running complex projects. A PhD or equivalent experience is essential, as is a proven ability to carry through research programmes from conception to completion. This post will be based on-site in Sumatra with external travel from there as required. This post requires a considerable amount of diplomacy and cultural awareness. The ability to speak Indonesian, or an aptitude and willingness to learn basic Indonesian are essential
