IUFRO Board Paves the Way for Attaining Strategic Goals
From 23 to 25 February 2011, more than 50 members of the IUFRO Enlarged
Board from 24 countries met in Vienna, Austria, for the 50th IUFRO
Board Meeting. This was the first gathering of the new Board that had
been elected at the XXIII World Congress in Seoul, Korea, in August
2010, for the period 2010-2014. The one-day business meeting was
followed by a two-day scientific seminar in the nearby Vienna Woods to
discuss the six key research goals of IUFRO. [4]
IUFRO Board Appoints Michael Kleine as New Deputy Executive Director
At its 50th meeting on 23 February 2011 in Vienna, Austria, the IUFRO
Board unanimously approved of Dr. Michael Kleine's nomination as new
IUFRO Deputy Executive Director. In the following interview Dr. Kleine
will outline, among other things, the future orientation and
coordination of programs, projects and initiatives. [5]
Greenhouse Gas Budgets of Soils under Changing Climate and Land Use

From 7-9 March 2011, the final workshop on COST Action 639: "Greenhouse
Gas Budgets of Soils under Changing Climate and Land Use" (BurnOut)
took place in Vienna, Austria. The main objective of the Action has
been the improved understanding of the management of greenhouse gas
emissions from European soils under different forms of land use and in
particular disturbance regimes. [6]
Forests are Key for High Quality Water Supply
Better forest management needed to maximize water-related benefits from
forests
(CPF press release dated 18 March 2011, Rome, Italy) By the year 2025,
1.8 billion people will be living in regions with absolute water
scarcity and two-thirds of the world's population may experience
water-stress conditions. Forests capture and store water and can play
an important role in providing drinking water for millions of people in
the world's mega-cities. [7]
IUFRO World Congress 2019: Call for Bids
At the previous IUFRO Enlarged Board meeting, held on 23 February 2011
in Vienna, Austria, the Congress Bidding Rules were formally approved
by the members of the IUFRO Board. IUFRO Member Organizations are
encouraged to consider submitting a bid for this highly important IUFRO
event. [8]
Copenhagen Sustainability Lectures
In 2011 the University of Copenhagen launched a new lecture series
called Copenhagen Sustainability Lectures aiming at making the
challenges of global sustainability more visible. On 7 March 2011, Ms
Inger Andersen, Vice President of Sustainable Development in the World
Bank, gave the second lecture in this series on "Greening Development:
Moving towards Rio+20 and beyond".
