Protective clothing with sensors
Whether for professionals or self-cutting buyers – personal protective
equipment is decisive for safety in forestry work. At INTERFORST 2014
manufacturers and dealers will present their latestproducts, ranging from
ever lighter ergonomically formed protective trousers up to integrated
sensors which stop the chain saw in case of contact. The International
Key Trade Fair for Forestry and Forest Technology takes place in Munich
from 16 to 20 July.
Currently, the most significant developments can beobserved in the area of cut protection trousers. Many manufacturers have opted for Dyneema as a standard material for cut-resistant inlets. However, this new material cannot change anything in the number of layers either. The majority of the manufacturers still provide for six cut-resistant layers. Thanks to Dyneema, however, it is possible to make the package of cut-resistant inlets thinnerand lighter than with conventional materials. Offering the same degree ofsafety, trousers made from this material are also more breathable. In addition, they are more ergonomic because they offer more freedom of movement.
Just in time for INTERFORST, the first manufacturerpresents a KWF certified cut protection trouser weighing less than 1000 grams. It has passed the KWF safety tests without restrictions. “The trend for cut protection trousers recognizably goes towards the development of lighter and more ergonomic models. This is the challenge we will be facing inthe next few years, and we are in the process of meeting the customers’ demandin this area“, states Bernd Bretthauer, Managing Director at HF-Sicherheitsbekleidung.
Another approach to prevent cuts when working with the chain saw is shown by the Hohenstein Institute at INTERFORST 2014: proximity sensors are sewn into the trouser, thus providing an active cut protection. An appropriately equipped chain saw is to turn off as soon as it comes into contact with the trouser. This way, cut protection trousers could become thinner and more ergonomic while nevertheless offering the same level of protection.
Within the framework of its forestry technology special show at INTERFORST, the Board of Trustees for Forestry Work and Technology (KWF) will show daily in hall B6 how “the risks of forestry work can be identified and controlled” and offer an overview of safe equipment. Moreover, the Board will award its KWF Innovation Medal to outstanding products at INTERFORST.
