 More Shoppers In Kagawa Pref. Carry Own Bags
 The government of Kagawa Prefecture, located on Shikoku Island in
 western Japan, announced on November 6, 2007, that the percent of
 shoppers carrying their own shopping bags in Kagawa increased to 8.8
percent, 2 points higher than in 2006. The prefecture has been
 conducting an eco-friendly shopping campaign since 2003 to promote
 waste reduction, energy saving, and resource saving in cooperation
 with Network Greenconsumer Kagawa, a nonprofit organization that
 promotes eco -friendly consumer lifestyles.

 Fluorescent Bulbs Replace Incandescent in World Heritage Site
 Buildings to Reduce CO2 Emissions
 In the historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, which are
 listed as World Heritage sites located in the prefectures of Gifu and
 Toyama, the incandescent light bulbs used in the Gassho-zukuri houses
 -- classic examples of traditional Japanese architecture -- were
 replaced with fluorescent bulbs, with the work conducted from October

 Employment Group Recommends Policies to Slow Decline of Japan's Labor
 Force

The Employment Policy Study Group, commissioned by the Ministry of
 Health, Labor and Welfare, published its report December 25, 2007, on
 the recommended direction of priority policies on labor and employment
 in Japan for the next five years or so. Based on its vision of
 Japanese economic society up to 2030, the Group predicts a decline of
 the labor force in 2030 by an estimated 10.7 million from the 2006
 level, which is a more serious situation than was estimated in its

 Retail Chain Switches to Green-sourced Electricity in 98 Shops in the
 Kanto Area

 Yamada Denki Co., a major Japanese mass retailer of consumer
 electronics, announced on December 13, 2007, that it had concluded a
 contract with Summit Energy Co. (part of the Sumitomo Corp. Group), a
 power producer and supplier (PPS) of green-sourced electricity. Under
 the contract, Summit Energy is to provide eco-friendly electricity to
 Yamada Denki along with a Green Power Certificate to confirm its

 Marubeni Enters Wind Energy Markets in North America

 Marubeni Corp., one of Japan's major general trading companies,
 announced on December 4, 2007, that it decided to enter wind energy
 markets in North America by obtaining 1.32 million shares of Oak Creek
 Energy Systems, Inc. (OCES), a wind energy developer in California.

 Japan and United Arab Emirates Collaborating on Solar Thermal Energy
 Project

 Cosmo Oil Co., a major Japanese petroleum distributor, and the Masdar-
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (MASDAR-ADFEC), a government-owned
 organization in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates,
 signed an agreement December 17, 2007, with the Tokyo Institute of
 Technology to collaborate on researching solar thermal energy

 Kokuyo Labels Its Own "Non-Eco" Products

 Kokuyo Group, a group of a leading Japanese manufacturers and
 marketers of office equipment and stationery, put "Non-Eco" labels on
 its own brand of products in its 2008 Kokuyo Union Catalog for
 stationary and furniture, issued on December 13, 2007. The purpose was
 to honestly indicate their own still-insufficient concern for the
