On Thursday 16 January 2014, the 17th JAGEN UND FISCHEN will be opening
its doors for four days in Augsburg, heralding an exciting hunt for
current information and new developments, and also for high quality
products at lucrative trade fair prices, including advice by well-known
professionals in the industry. The special shows put on by huntsmen and anglers, the informal dog show with 30 or so breeds of hunting dogs, the world of fly fishing, various groups of hunting horn blowers, a cross-country track for vehicles, the bird of prey demonstration as well as top class experts in the hunting and angling forum will be ensuring that the support programme of events will more than keep you busy throughout the whole day.
Opening discussion with top drawer speakers
His Highness Moritz Fürst zu Oettingen-Wallerstein, Professor Jürgen Vocke, President of the Bavarian Hunting Association, Professor Albert Göttle, President of the Bavarian Regional Angling Association, Hans-Joachim Weirather, President of the Swabian Angling Association, Dr Oliver Born, Head of the Swabian Angling Advice Department, The Bavarian Jagdkönigin Bettina Frühwald and Dr Kurt Gribl, Lord Mayor of Augsburg, will be discussing controversial topics such as forward-looking game management with the objective of improving the habitats for fish and game for the longer term, by putting dead wood into water, for example, but also by means of cultivating intercrops suitable for game. Other topics covered will be beaver and cormorant, hunting compatible with animal protection, agriculture and forestry accepting co-responsibility as well as the state accepting responsibility by involving the honorary offices into the relevant projects. Lord Mayor Gribl will be opening the 17. JAGEN UND FISCHEN officially with a walk around the trade fair after the opinion-forming informative round of talks, which is bound to be exciting. It will be moderated by Dr Alexander Kölbing, who is well-known as a biologist specialising in angling and film author of natural history topics in Bavarian television as well as author of the best seller "Fischerprüfung leicht gemacht".
Special displays put on by anglers and hunters
Native species of fish and so-called "aliens", which do not belong in our waters, are topics dealt with by the Swabian Angling Advice Department and the display behind thick aquarium glass is impressive. You can play an active role on the casting area organised by the Fischereierbandes Schwaben e.V., where small weights on the rod should land on the bull‘s eye if you can place them there. As part of the special angling show there is also an opportunity to look over the shoulder of a large number of well-known experts making rods, tying flies or casting a fly-fishing rod and pick up real tips from the professionals. Mirjana Pavlic, a past master of fly-fishing is, for example, supporting the Augsburg Angling Centre with customer advice with her experience and technical knowledge about the latest fly rods manufactured by Winston as well as fly reels from Nautilus and Bauer. In this hall the Ortlfinger Fischerstüble restaurant will be ensuring culinary satisfaction with meals prepared with native fish.
"Hunting is nature protection in practice" is the motto of the 500 square metre special show put on by the Jägervereinigung Augsburg e.V. The visitors will acquire a deep insight into all sorts of habitats and their species of animals at risk such as, for example, golden eagle, rock partridge, rock ptarmigan, mountain hare, marmots, black grouse plus partridge in authentic displays in the form of dioramas, exhibits and teaching aids and how the hunters continually endeavour to maintain populations with their preservation work. The contribution by the forum of Bavarian Huntresses focuses on aquatic habitats and in the live workshops the visitors can admire traditional craftwork.
Hunting forum
The sight of wolves will become an everyday occurrence in Germany once more. In her lecture entitled, "Do we still have enough space in Bavaria for Wolf, Lynx and cohort?", the game biologist Dr Christine Miller shows how the wild animals, and the hunters too, can, and will have to, adjust to this change. Hans Schlegel, dog expert from Switzerland will be speaking every day about the man-dog relationship and the role of so-called social learning plays here in contrast with formal training. Hunting in the wilderness of Newfoundland and real adventure form the subject of the lecture presented by Professor Harold C. Lyon. Hubert Dietrich and Johann Fischer will be talking about the life and significance of the honey bee for our cultivated landscape.
Angling forum
In addition to Sebastian Hänel, the expert on pike perch, who will be talking "Predators under the boat, vertical angling in artificial lakes" the expert on predatory fish, Torsten Ahren, will also be in on the act and he will be passing on his experience in his usual exciting way. Benedikt Götzfried, also an expert on predatory fish will be expanding the range of knowledge on show about surface bait as the most spectacular method of spin fishing. Professional guide Stefan Seuß is a specialist on catfish. He and Markus Eule will be reporting every day in various lectures about the fascination of fishing for catfish.

Active experience from innovative exhibitors
Good co-ordination is what you need for archery, be it with the archery simulator or with the traditional bow and arrow as well as in the video shooting gallery. The "4x4 Roadeo" mobile Off-Road-track from Suzuki guarantees to put your nerves on edge. In a free workshop Roberto Heindl, who is of mixed Arapaho-Indian descent, will be bringing the old Indian culture to life, for not only the youngsters among the visitors, by making a medicine bag from real leather. The Gregor Luisoder environment foundation will be providing information about the Bavarian wildlife project at the "Bayern wild" stand. The replica of a small litter is chiefly designed to attract children to crawl in. A touchscreen monitor and trained staff will answer all your questions about bears, wolves, and lynx. The birds of prey demonstration will show the large and graceful sweep of the golden eagle‘s wingspan when Schorchi takes to the stage or else when the Bengal owl plus a sparrowhawk, both young birds from the Falknerei Schreyer falconry, soar up into the skies with youthful vim, laying on spectacular air displays for the visitors in the open air. The troop of hunting horn blowers "Horrido" e.V. from Augsburg will be sounding traditional tunes. The musical spectrum will be enhanced with the Donau-Ries Hunt Choir as well as other wind groups and groups of singers. The Jagdgebrauchshundeverein Augsburg e.V. will be taking advantage of JAGEN UND FISCHEN as the ideal warm-up act for its 125-year association celebrations. There will be about 30 or so different breeds of hunting dog participating in the daily informal dog show, demonstrating the characteristics of the different breeds and how they can be used for hunting. The "Hunting dogs in action" demonstrations will provide an informative insight into the extensive training of hunting dogs. In the exhibition area the breeders of these breeds will be pleased to pass on their experience. The aromas from the game and fish kitchen contain any amount of bait attracting those who cook as a hobby.
More than 200 exhibitors from the worlds of hunting and angling with their products, some of which are new, will ensure a real shopping experience for the trade fair visitors.
